Who Is Toll
Started in 1888 by Albert Toll in Newcastle on the back of a horse and cart the Toll business was sold twice before Toll Transport was purchased by Paul Little and Mark Rowsthorn in a management buy out in 1989 and was rebranded as Toll Express in 1989.
Under the stewardship of Paul and Mark, Toll Transport adopted an acquisition strategy that saw them acquire Tasmania Express in 1991, Brambles Transport industries in 1996 followed by 8 TNT transport and logistics business in 1997. In 1988 they acquired Ipec from Mayne Nickless, and in 2001 they purchased Finemores transport and the road transport interests of Wesfarmers. In 2002 they purchased BHP’s stevedoring business, 50% stake in Pacific national, and took over freight corp, national Rail Corporation, Brambles shipping and Mayne nickless Express business. 2003 they acquired Tranz Rail in New Zealand which went on to become Toll NZ.
In 2006 Toll was Acquired by Patrick Corporation in a hostile takeover. As part of this acquisition Patrick and Pacific National, were spun-off into a stand-alone listed company Asciano limited.
In 2015 Japan post holdings purchased Toll and all their assets for $6.5 Billion.
