What is a Pallet? - Materials and Purposes

So let’s get to the fundamentals, you may think this is too basic, but we’ll cover crucial details including the multifaceted purposes of a pallet and how selecting the correct material for your pallet could save the company thousands.

A Pallet By Definition

Typically, A pallet is a flat structure made of plastic, metal or wood, utilised by companies for the purpose of storage and transportation.

The Benefits of Using a Pallet

 Palletisation has many benefits;

  • A pallet streamlines the process end to end, enabling the use of machinery to manoeuvre the shipment, saving time and manual handling (charges).
  • Pallets engage a physical structure to the shipment, increasing a vessel’s capacity to load up, which is economically and environmentally favourable.
  • Adopting the use of pallets decreases the frequency of compromised goods in transit.
  • When storing goods, pallets can act as a helpful medium to contain mess and increase functionality and flow of operations.
  • Sending bulk is cheaper than sending a large quantity of smaller shipments.

Pallet Materials and How they Affect Your Shipment

Selecting a material for your pallet must be approached with much strategy. You must consider the distance travelled, the method of transportation, the weight of your product, your storage limitations, and your budget.

Wooden Pallets

Wooden Pallets can be crafted from plywood, presswood or standard timber. They are relatively inexpensive, quite easy to fix and kind to the environment. However, their weight may create additional expenses that were previously saved during the original purchase, and their susceptibility to damage may incur ongoing repair costs.

Metal Pallets

Metal pallets are comfortably priced between wooden and plastic pallets and are even more durable. They are, however, hard to repair and the heaviest of the three options, which may affect shipping costs and profit margins.

Plastic Pallets

Plastic pallets are a popular option due to their durability and lightweight nature, you may experience complications down the track as they are expensive to repair, impossible to recycle, and the initial investment is more substantial than metal and wooden pallets.

How Big is a Standard Shipping Pallet? - Industry Sizes

The International Organization for Standardisation states that there are six regulation-sized pallets. Below is a table of their dimensions in inches, centimetres and the countries that consistently adopt each dimension.

What Is the Maximum Weight You Can Ship on a Pallet?

Three separate capacities must be factored in when considering the pallet weight requirements;

Rackable Load Capacity - Refers to a specific type of pallet that can be stored in an open span racking system.

Static Load Capacity - A pallet’s capacity when it is immobile and evenly supported from underneath.

Dynamic Load Capacity - The maximum weight a pallet can safely transport if it is to be moved around.

How Many Pallets Fit in a Shipping Container? - FTL and LTL

Shipping containers are separated into two different formats, FTL and LTL -

FTL - Full Truckload

26-30 Pallets Fit in an FTL shipping container.

When a company ships via FTL, they use the entirety of the container’s storage capacity. There are many benefits to using FTL, firstly the container can fit more as the pallets are uniformed, and for the company, the shipment is faster as you are working with one schedule, and it’s cheaper because it was shipped in bulk.

LTL - Less than Truckload

LTL Trucks fit up to 6 pallets per shipment.
 An LTL shipment is made of many small shipments, which means that every company with cargo on board must expect longer transit times due to the complicated schedule. LTL may not be the ideal option for companies with fragile or perishable products due to increased handling and transfers.

How Much Does it Cost to Ship a Pallet?
