New DHL packaging rules for International shipments

On the 1st June 2018 DHL introduced some new packaging rules for all international courier shipments.

These rules were introduced to reduce costs for moving ideal or perfect freight, restrict freight that does not meet the carrier's freight profile and apply some additional charges to freight that needs a little more TLC.

So understanding the new rules, looking at how your items are packed can affect your shipping costs and the speed of your freight moving around the globe.

The new DHL packing rules

As of 1 June 2018, all shipments entering the DHL network will need to be correctly packed, with trained couriers assessing the packaging at the time of pick-up.

In simple terms, DHL will now only be accepting shipments that are packed according to their specific guidelines.

New DHL weight rules

Effective 1 September 2018, DHL will only accept shipments containing pieces up to 300 kilograms in actual (dead) weight and 300 centimetres in length. The total maximum weight for a multi-piece shipment remains unchanged at 1,000 kilograms.

This is exclusively for the Time Definite International (TDI) product.

It is perfectly okay in many instances to simply break packages down into smaller individual pieces that are accepted in the DHL Express network. You can also contact the DHL Global Forwarding division for support if required.

Why are DHL packing rules being introduced?

The new regulations are being introduced to improve quality and safety, and strengthen the DHL network overall for smoother service for customers and clients.

It is important to be aware of the new standards or you risk leaving your package in limbo. The key points to remember are:

  • DHL will no longer accept poorly packed items.
  • DHL will no longer accept pieces weighing more than 300 kilograms and 300. centimetres in length (width 120cm x height 160cm)
