UPS emergency surge fees were revised on 19 April 2026, affecting selected international shipments into and out of Australia. The fee is calculated per kilogram of billable weight and applies on top of the standard fuel surcharge, increasing total shipping costs across selected UPS international air services.

This article covers the current import and export rates for Australian shippers, the UPS services affected, and the additional surcharges that stack on top of the surge fee.

UPS Emergency Surge Fees in 2026: What Australian Shippers Should Know

  • UPS emergency surge fees, formerly called Peak or Demand Surcharges, apply to selected UPS international shipments based on origin, destination, and service type.
  • The 19 April 2026 revision expanded UPS emergency surge fees to include import shipments into Australia originating from the US and Asia Pacific.
  • UPS calculates the surge fee per kilogram of billable weight, so costs rise proportionally as shipment weight increases.
  • The surge fee may apply alongside the UPS fuel surcharge and other applicable UPS charges, including residential and remote area surcharges.
  • The fee applies only to UPS Worldwide Express, UPS Worldwide Express Plus, UPS Worldwide Express Saver, UPS Worldwide Expedited, UPS Worldwide Express Freight, and UPS Worldwide Express Freight Midday services.
  • UPS emergency surge fees remain in effect until further notice and may change without a fixed expiry date.

What Are UPS Surge Emergency Fees?

UPS emergency surge fees are additional charges applied to selected international shipments during periods of increased shipping demand or higher operational costs. UPS previously referred to these charges as Peak or Demand Surcharges. UPS determines when the fee applies, which routes are affected, and the applicable rates based on network conditions and operational requirements.

  • The fee is calculated per kilogram of billable weight, including dimensional weight where applicable.
  • The standard UPS fuel surcharge applies separately on top of UPS emergency surge fees.
  • UPS emergency surge fees apply cumulatively if multiple qualifying conditions are met. UPS does not give discounts or waivers unless agreed in writing.

For example, an Australian business importing a 50kg shipment from the US now pays an additional $37.50 on top of freight and fuel surcharges, purely from the $0.75/kg import surge fee. For heavier or more frequent shipments, this adds up quickly.

Businesses importing from higher-surcharge regions such as the Middle East may face significantly higher costs, with a 50kg shipment potentially attracting an additional $245 before fuel and other surcharges.

Current UPS Surge Emergency Fee Rates for Australia (April 2026)

The current UPS emergency surge fees affect import shipments into Australia from selected global origin regions and export shipments from Australia to selected international destinations.

The previous surcharge period applied from 5 April 2026 to 18 April 2026. The rates below took effect on 19 April 2026 and remain active until further notice.

UPS emergency surge fees apply only to the following UPS international services:

  • UPS Worldwide Express
  • UPS Worldwide Express Plus
  • UPS Worldwide Express Saver
  • UPS Worldwide Expedited
  • UPS Worldwide Express Freight
  • UPS Worldwide Express Freight Midday.

The surcharge does not apply to domestic UPS shipments.

UPS emergency surge fees apply cumulatively where multiple surcharge conditions are met. The fee applies in addition to all other UPS shipping charges, including fuel and residential surcharges. UPS does not provide waivers or discounts unless formally agreed in writing. Current figures can be verified on the UPS Shipping Zones and Rates Page before booking a shipment.

Other UPS Surcharges That Apply Alongside the Surge Fee

UPS emergency surge fees form only one part of the total UPS shipping cost structure. Additional surcharges may apply depending on shipment type, destination, service level, and delivery location.

For an Australian business receiving a shipment from a Middle Eastern supplier to a residential address, the combined cost could include the $4.41/kg surge fee, the standard fuel surcharge, and a residential delivery surcharge, all stacking on top of the base freight rate. Reviewing each surcharge component before booking helps reduce the risk of unexpected shipping costs.

Additional UPS Surcharges That Stack on Top of the Surge Fee

Surcharge Type What Triggers It Approximate Cost
Fuel Surcharge Applies to all UPS shipments and adjusts weekly based on jet fuel price indexes. Index-based. Verify current rates on the UPS Australia Fuel Surcharge Page.
Residential Surcharge Applies when shipments are delivered to residential addresses or home-based businesses in Australia. Approximately $4.40 per shipment. Verify current pricing before booking.
Extended and Remote Area Surcharge Applies to pickups or deliveries in less accessible metropolitan, regional, or rural locations. Variable by location.
Disbursement Fee Applies when UPS advances duties and taxes on behalf of the importer during customs clearance. Variable and conditional depending on shipment requirements.
