Q&A with Kate Nelson, Couriers and Freight Australia’s New National Business Development Manager

Jul 1, 2024

In an exciting development for Couriers & Freight Australia, we’re pleased to introduce Kate Nelson as our new National Business Development Manager.

With over a decade of experience in the logistics and supply chain industry since 2011, Kate brings a wealth of knowledge and fresh perspective to our team. Her extensive background in the field has equipped her with a deep understanding of the industry’s evolving needs.

We sat down with Kate to learn more about her background, vision and what she hopes to achieve in her new role.

Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you came to join Couriers & Freight?

My journey with Couriers & Freight actually began as a partner.

In my previous role, I worked with C&F as a supply partner, providing Third-Party Logistics (3PL) and Linehaul solutions for my clients. I had the pleasure of collaborating with Tammy Matthews and the C&F team for about two years before joining the company.

When I was looking for a change, I spotted a position posted by Rob on LinkedIn. I took a chance and called Tammy to ask, "Would you consider me?"

I'm so grateful they did!

The team is amazing, the culture is incredible, and I'm really excited about what we will achieve together over the coming years. We're going to kick butt!

What are your primary responsibilities in your new role?

My main focus is to listen to what our clients want, need, and are looking for. Then, I explore how we can support them with all the platforms and partners we have access to.

It's also about future planning for our clients' growth.

What do you see as the biggest growth opportunities in the Australian logistics industry?

There's a significant opportunity to provide quality services for big and bulky, non-conveyable freight profiles. The major providers are moving away from anything that isn't a nice, neat box.

This leaves a big gap in the market for quality providers handling non-conveyables, and that's where Couriers & Freight can really shine.

What are some key trends in the industry that you're excited about?

I'm particularly excited about the increased use of technology to improve communication with receivers. This trend will improve how we interact with customers and streamline our operations.

What advice would you give to someone looking to pursue a career in the freight industry?

You need to love a fast-paced environment, enjoy the wins, and not sweat the small stuff. It's important to go with the flow and be ready to pivot when required.

The freight industry is fantastic, but it's not for everyone.

If you thrive in dynamic environments, you'll find it incredibly rewarding.

Can you share a memorable experience or achievement in your career that you're particularly proud of?

There are so many! I've been very fortunate to have had incredible experiences throughout my career.

One that stands out, which few people might know about, happened 26 years ago.

I was one of six people chosen to travel from Melbourne to the UK, representing my company at the time. Our mission was to teach our UK counterparts how to sell pet insurance in a direct sales capacity, working from in-store booths at Sainsbury's.

It was not only an achievement but also a great experience.

What message would you like to convey to the customers and partners of C&F?

I want our customers and partners to know that I'm here to help find solutions that work for them, their businesses, and their customers.

My goal is to make logistics easier to navigate and more beneficial for everyone involved.

As Kate settles into her new role, it's clear that her enthusiasm, experience, and customer-focused approach will be invaluable assets to Couriers & Freight Australia.

We're excited to have Kate on board and look forward to her positive impact on our operations and client relationships. Welcome to the team, Kate!
