The Eircode requirement took effect on 2 February 2026. Every shipment to or from the Republic of Ireland must now include a valid Eircode, or carrier systems cannot generate a shipping label. According to Eircode, Ireland's official postcode authority, the code uniquely identifies every residential and business address in the country.
For Australian exporters, this creates an address verification step that must be completed before dispatch. E-commerce sellers managing Irish customer records may find that stored addresses are missing the postcode entirely. This article explains what Eircodes are, which shipments are affected, and what shippers need to do before their next booking.

The Eircode requirement refers to the mandatory inclusion of Ireland’s national postcode in shipping address data. Eircode is the official postcode system used across the Republic of Ireland. Each code contains seven characters and identifies one specific residential or commercial address. According to official information, the system assigns a unique alphanumeric code to every address in the country so carriers can identify exact delivery locations.
Ireland introduced Eircode in 2015 to improve delivery accuracy and address identification across the country. Carrier service updates confirm that the postcode must now appear in shipment address data during label creation. A FedEx announcement states that from 2 February 2026, shipments to and from Ireland must include a valid Eircode to generate a shipping label.Â
This requirement applies only to the Republic of Ireland. Northern Ireland continues to use the UK postcode system, which follows a different address structure. The update relates strictly to address data validation at the label creation stage, not customs declarations or tariff rules.

The Eircode requirement applies to all international shipments entering or leaving the Republic of Ireland, regardless of carrier or service type. This includes express courier parcels, economy shipping services, and freight consignments.
Shipping platforms and carrier systems must therefore check the postcode field during label creation. Without a valid Eircode, carrier systems cannot generate the shipment label, and the shipment cannot proceed.
Carrier guidance confirms that this requirement applies across major international networks, not only one provider. Updates from international carriers like FedEx state that shipments must include a valid Eircode to generate a shipping label. Shippers should therefore treat the postcode requirement as a standard addressing rule when preparing shipments to Ireland.
FedEx also confirms that TNT shipments are currently excluded from this requirement. This exception applies only to TNT services and may change if carrier policies align in future updates.
FedEx announcement notes TNT shipments are currently excluded. Subject to change.
Australian exporters shipping goods to Irish distributors, retailers, or consumers should therefore verify postcode data before booking shipments. Confirming the correct Eircode at the address stage prevents booking errors and allows the shipment to move into the carrier network without delay.
Completing this step before booking prevents label generation errors and avoids dispatch delays.
Use the official Eircode Finder to locate the correct postcode.
Every Eircode contains seven characters. The first three characters form the routing key, which identifies the regional delivery area. The final four characters identify the unique delivery address.

Enter the Eircode in the postcode field when creating the shipping label through your carrier portal or freight platform. Confirm that the postcode matches the delivery address exactly before finalising the booking.
Irish customers often omit their Eircode at checkout or account registration. Before your next dispatch, cross-check stored Irish addresses against the Eircode Finder and update any records missing the postcode.Â
For high-volume shippers, doing this now, rather than at booking, prevents repeated label errors across multiple orders.
Couriers & Freight gives Australian businesses access to multiple international carriers through one shipping platform.Â
